I am an economist (BSc/MSc) with a PhD in social science genetics. My research investigates how genetic variants influence traits such as risk taking, impulsivity, health-risk behaviors (e.g., smoking and drinking), and psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, I study how these genetic propensities lead to adverse health outcomes and health inequalities at different ages. My recent and ongoing research focuses on the economic consequences of improved genomic prediction of disease risk and the effects of introducing new genetic testing technologies in society (e.g., the effects of consumer genetic testing on risk classification in non-compulsory insurance).
My current position is as assistant professor in the Department of Economics at Universiteit Leiden. Before that, I did a three-year postdoc in psychiatric genetics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, including a role as visiting researcher at Geisinger Health System, a U.S.-based integrated health-care provider with a spearhead genetic research program. In 2018, I was awarded a topicality grant by the Dutch academic network Netspar to study the impact of polygenic indexes for life insurance and retirement.
